How to Choose Spring Materials?

2026 Complete Guide to Spring Material Properties & Application Selection

Springs are essential fundamental elastic components widely used in machinery parts, automotive manufacturing, precision electronics, industrial equipment, hardware and home appliance industries. The service life, stability, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance of springs are 90% determined by the raw material. Most common spring failures including fracture, elastic force attenuation, rusting and high-temperature softening are mainly caused by incorrect material selection rather than processing defects.

As a professional custom spring manufacturer with years of industry experience, we have sorted out a complete spring material selection guide based on different working temperatures, environments, loads and industrial scenarios. This covers carbon spring steel, alloy spring steel, stainless steel spring, high-temperature alloy spring, copper alloy spring and other mainstream materials, helping enterprises select the right spring material accurately, avoid operational failures and reduce replacement costs.

1. General Economical Grade: Carbon Spring Steel (Best for Normal Temperature Standard Working Conditions)

Main Grades: 65Mn, 70#, 82B, T9A Piano Wire (SWP-B)

Core Performance Advantages: As the most widely used and cost-effective basic spring material, carbon spring steel features moderate carbon content. After quenching and tempering treatment, it delivers high strength, excellent elasticity and easy forming performance. It perfectly matches most normal-temperature, low-corrosion and standard-load working scenarios. Among all grades, SWP-B piano wire has higher purity and better toughness with superior fatigue resistance compared with ordinary 65Mn, making it ideal for precision small springs.

Material Limitations: Poor corrosion resistance, prone to rust in humid environments; limited high-temperature resistance with a maximum long-term working temperature of 120℃. It is easy to suffer elastic relaxation and softening deformation under high temperatures.

Application Scenarios: Daily hardware, furniture accessories, general mechanical equipment, low-voltage electrical switches, toy springs, standard return springs, light-load compression and tension springs.

2. High Strength & Fatigue Resistance: Alloy Spring Steel (Special for Automotive & Heavy-Duty Equipment)

Main Grades: 60Si2MnA, 55CrSi, 50CrVA, SiCrV Alloy Spring Steel

Core Performance Advantages: Alloy spring steel is added with silicon, chromium, vanadium, molybdenum and other alloy elements on the basis of carbon steel, which greatly improves stress relaxation resistance, fatigue resistance, high temperature resistance and impact resistance. With uniform and pure internal structure, it maintains stable elasticity without deformation or fracture during high-frequency reciprocating operation. It is the core material for industrial heavy-duty springs and automotive springs, suitable for medium-high temperature, high-load and high-frequency working conditions.

50CrVA features excellent high temperature resistance and impact resistance, supporting long-term service at 250℃; 60Si2MnA has outstanding toughness for suspension heavy-load springs; SiCrV further optimizes high-temperature stability and effectively delays elastic force attenuation.

Application Scenarios: Automotive suspension springs, engine valve springs, brake backplate springs, mechanical heavy-duty compression springs, equipment shock absorption springs, high-frequency reciprocating working springs, automotive brake system shims.

3. Corrosion & Moisture Resistant: Stainless Steel Spring Material (For Outdoor, Clean & Humid Working Conditions)

Main Grades: 304, 301, 316L, 17-7PH

Core Performance Advantages: Stainless steel spring materials are the preferred choice for anti-rust and anti-corrosion scenarios. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, they have excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and oxidation resistance. They require no surface anti-rust treatment and can maintain stable elastic performance in humid, dusty and corrosive environments for a long time.

304 is the most versatile grade with balanced cost and performance for general anti-corrosion applications; 316L adds molybdenum element, featuring stronger acid and salt corrosion resistance, suitable for marine and chemical environments; 17-7PH is precipitation hardening stainless steel with ultra-high strength and fatigue resistance, ideal for high-precision and high-reliability precision elastic parts.

Material Limitations: Ordinary 304/301 stainless steel has lower tensile strength than alloy spring steel, with limited bearing capacity; the overall cost is higher than carbon steel.

Application Scenarios: Outdoor equipment, medical devices, food machinery, marine equipment, bathroom hardware, electronic precision springs, corrosive environment elastic parts.
