compression and extension springs

Springs are neat tools that make many things function. Springs fall in two main categories: Compression springs & Extension springs. They look different and do different jobs, but both are important in everyday things like toys, bikes and cars. Read on to find out more about how they work and where we come across them.

Compression springs are inversed in that when you press on them, they compress down to a shorter/height. On releasing, the spring returns to its initial shape. This ability to bounce back is what is useful about compression springs in many things. They can be found in pens, door handles and even mattresses.

Benefits and Common Uses

The same does not hold true with extension springs. They pull out when you try to pull on them. When you let go of the pulls, they return to normal size. Extension springs can be found in trampolines, garage doors, and toys such as yo-yos.

What you will leave with is dead easy to mod and good to have at lower than spring loaded levels. That makes them great for things that need a lot of oomph in a small area like drill presses, or clamps. Extension springs are great when it comes to stretching things, such as in scales or screen doors.
